Happy Birthday Lincoln and Darwin

February 12th marked the 200th Birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin.

It is extremely hard to imagine the modern world without the contributions Darwin and Lincoln have had on modern science and racial equality respectively in our country.

As a scientist, I feel that Darwin's Origin of Species, remains one of the most important scientific observations ever documented in human history. It should be noted, that Darwin's views at the time, were very controversial and that even today, some believe that the theory of evolution is still not proven, hence why it is still called the theory of evolution and the law of evolution.

Darwin's work, in light of the fossil record our planet contains, as well as modern carbon dating experiments that have proven the age of fossilized organisms found, is still not widely accepted.

As an American, I rank Abraham Lincoln as one of our greatest presidents. His feeling that America couldn't be a great nation without racial equality, defines our nation today. Without the Emancipation Proclamation crafted by Lincoln, our country may have never achieved it's standing in the modern world as the land of the free.

Lincoln's bold choice to free the slaves, which was even more controversial than that of Darwin's work, eventually cost him his life. However, I feel Lincoln's dreams have been somewhat realized as our country has continued to heal it's scarred past. The election of our current President, African-American Barack Obama, has helped put some closure on our dirty past that Lincoln desired to end.

Darwin and Lincoln both took extreme risks in expressing their beliefs. I find it very compelling, that even after many decades have passed since their work has been completed, that both of their contributions still impact American society and the world today.

Maybe it is time that we honor Darwin, 200 hundred years after his birth, in calling his work, Darwin's Law of Evolution, much in the same way that 200 years after Lincoln's birth, America has completed his dream of racial equality by electing our first African-American president.

Plants helping out in the house

Having house plants in your home or building are not only nice for decoration but also are great at assisting in improving the indoor air quality of the property.

We all remember from science class, that plants remove Carbon Dioxide from the air. However, certain plants can also remove many different chemical compounds that are introduced into your indoor environment from sources that include furniture, carpet and building materials.

The Natural News.com has a great reference article linked below on this topic. The article lists which plants are best at removing certain chemical compounds. The studies were conducted in part by NASA. I think I am going to pick up a new plant today!

Air Duct Cleaning

Many people ask me about the benefits of cleaning air ducts in their homes and buildings.

A dirty HVAC system and duct work can be a cause of poor indoor air quality in a property. Cleaning air ducts properly can greatly improve the indoor air quality of your home or building.

I recommend performing air quality testing of the property and surface sampling of the ducts before you have the system cleaned. This will help determine if the ducts are actually a source of an indoor air quality concern. This can also prevent you paying for a costly service that may not be necessary.

In addition, if the air quality testing and sampling inspection does detect an indoor air quality issue prior to HVAC/Duct work cleaning, you will have baseline data established for your property. Having this baseline data established is essential in making sure that clearance of the possible contaminants has been achieved after the cleaning has been completed.

This article from the Fond Du Lac Reporter is a great reference on the topic of air duct/HVAC cleaning.

Attached in the link is a good article from The Daily Green. The article is about potential contributors to indoor air quality issues in your home.

In addition, any sort of water damage, moisture and condensation could also contribute to biologically related indoor air quality problems as well, such as a musty smell, mold spores and visible growth.

Check it out.
